Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin (born May 27, 1978) is a Ghanaian lawyer and prominent politician. He is a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and serves as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Effutu constituency in the Central Region of Ghana.
He currently serves as the Leader of the Manority Bench in the 8th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.
Early Life and Education
Afenyo-Markin was born in Winneba in the Central Region of Ghana.
• Basic Education: Attended STC Demonstration Primary and Junior Secondary School, completing in 1994.
• Secondary Education: Attended St. Augustine's College in Cape Coast, completing his secondary studies in 1997.
• Tertiary & Legal Education:
• Obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LLB/MGT) from the University of Buckingham (2003–2006).
• Earned a Barrister at Law certification from the Ghana School of Law (2007–2009).
• Completed a Master of Arts (MA) in International Politics and Security Studies at the University of Bradford (2009–2011).
Professional Career:
Before his political office, Afenyo-Markin worked in both the public and private postal/logistics and legal sectors:
• Ghana Post Company Limited: Worked as a Principal Postal Officer (1999–2003).
• Excel Courier Ghana Limited: Served as Director (2004–2011).
• Legal Practice: Worked as an Associate at Dehenya Chambers (2010–2016) and became a managing partner at Afenyo-Markin, Okutu and Associates.
Political Career:
Parliamentary Entry and Service
In the 2012 parliamentary elections, Afenyo-Markin contested on the ticket of the NPP for the Effutu seat, defeating the incumbent NDC candidate, Mike Allen Hammah.
He has retained his parliamentary seat in subsequent elections.
During his tenure in Parliament, he has served on several standing and select committees, including:
• Defence and Interior Committee
• Finance Committee
• Appointments Committee
• Business Committee
Leadership Positions:
• ECOWAS Parliament: In 2021, he was sworn in during an extraordinary session of the ECOWAS Parliament in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
• Deputy Majority Leader: Served as Deputy Majority Leader in the 8th Parliament.
• Majority Leader: In February 2024, following a leadership restructuring by the New Patriotic Party, he assumed the position of Majority Leader of Parliament.
Public Sector Appointments & Community Initiatives:
• Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL): Appointed Chairman of the Governing Board of GWCL in 2017.
• The Effutu Dream Initiatives: Led several local development initiatives in his constituency, including the One Teacher, One Laptop donation drive, construction of local libraries, and community beautification projects.
