Bongo Ideas Takes Aim at Black Sherif, Kweku Smoke and KiDi Over Ghana Music
Ghanaian social media commentator Bongo Ideas has sparked conversation online after sharing a strongly worded critique of Ghana’s current music scene and the recent works of some of the country’s leading artistes.
In a Facebook post, Bongo Ideas compared the music of Nigerian superstar Asake with works from Ghanaian artistes including Black Sherif, Kweku Smoke and KiDi, arguing that the contrast has left him disappointed with the current state of Ghanaian music.
He accused some music fans of engaging in what he described as “fake stan-ship” instead of being honest with artistes about the quality of their work.
Bongo Ideas directed some of his strongest criticism at Black Sherif, questioning whether the artiste could maintain his position at the top of Ghana’s music industry if he does not make significant changes.
According to him, Black Sherif's recent projects show a decline in quality and that the artiste no longer sounds like the musician who previously earned international recognition, including a collaboration with Nigerian superstar Burna Boy.

He further suggested that Black Sherif should consider taking a break from music to reassess his creative direction, while describing the artiste's latest EP in highly negative terms.
The comments have generated debate among music fans, with some agreeing that Ghanaian artistes need constructive criticism to improve, while others have defended Black Sherif and rejected Bongo Ideas' assessment.
The debate raises a broader question about Ghana's music industry: Are fans becoming too protective of their favourite artistes to give them honest criticism when their music falls short of expectations?
